We're Coming Back

Listowel Kitchener and Waterloo Photographer

Originally, before my life was crazy, I started North Perth Daily because I was going out every day and shooting anyway. I had just switched to digital shooting and got stocked up on gear, and I would sneak out after the kids were in bed, or any time Josh would let me, and shoot whatever I could find, always in and around North Perth.

It was really cool getting into photography again because I was constantly looking for a picture, making an effort to see the beauty, or the potential for beauty, wherever I went. And mentally filing all those great shots away for later when I could get away with my camera.

I wanted to do something with the photos I was taking, and I think I may have actually set up the North Perth Daily blog before this one, just as something to do, not really intending that people would care that much to see it. Around the time when I actually started posting my North Perth photos, I also started my business, went back to work full time, and of course was still mom to a 1 year old and a 3 year old.

My late night rendezvous (rendezvouses?) with my camera became fewer and farther between, and my kids begged me not to bring it along as a distraction when we went out together. So North Perth Daily slid further and further down my list of priorities, and then when I left North Perth last Spring, I crossed it off the list altogether.

Well, I'm back now, and I'd love to start sharing those photos again, but this time with a twist.

I'm going to relaunch North Perth Daily (with a few tweaks) on March 1, 2009, and I'm inviting everyone to contribute. If you have photos taken in North Perth or closeby of ANYTHING that reflects what life is like here, and you'd like to share them with others, please let me know.

I don't want the blog to be about me and my pictures. I want it to be about us. After all, I bet the thing that has kept all of us here in this small town is the wonderful sense of community that we have.

If you have a photo to submit, send it to me at northperthdaily@livingproofphotography.ca. You can also share a story that goes with it, information about yourself, what you ate yesterday, whatever you want. Basically it's your blog post, so you have control*. If you want it to be anonymous, let me know.

So, let's have fun together, let's share our lives with each other, and let's celebrate the place we live and the people who make it feel like Home!

Oh, and if you've got something community-oriented coming up that you'd like me to come take pictures of, let me know. I'm always looking for cool things to shoot.

* I reserve the right to exclude any submissions that include obscenity, nudity, or any gratuitousness of things that should not be gratuitous. I don't intend to censor anybody, but let's keep it respectful. If I decide not to include your submission for any reason, I will let you know, so if you simply don't hear from me, it's because I never got your submission, not because I thought it was inappropriate. Please try again. Don't make me do this on my own - that didn't work!

fascination

I love that I can take my kids for a walk and there are so many places where public buildings and greenery are right next to each other! In larger cities it really does become a concrete world. This was taken in the lot next to the old pumping station and the current Chamber of Commerce office. As soon as the kids saw the single dandelion in the grass, they remembered the endless fields of these that they saw last year. They were both so happy to see it growing there. Which brings me to one thing I love about kids - they know that weeds can be beautiful.

An Evening Swing

I think most parents can appreciate when the days start to get a bit longer. When darkness falls early it usually means I don't get to spend as much time with the kids as I would like to, but the days are getting longer in North Perth, and it was so unseasonably warm around here this week. Here's my daughter enjoying a swing in the evening and she was plenty warm without sleeves! We sure enjoyed the sneak peek at summer and took advantage of it!

Gone Parking

Finally! It has been a long winter of "Can we go to the park?" and finally we were able to take the kids again without worrying about losing the little one in the snow. Listowel has an awesome park, and our kids absolutely love it!

Biker Babe

Well, today was my daughter's first day on a bike. She hopped on her big sister's old trike, and I had to snap a few shots before I made her get off since we didn't have a helmet for her yet. Don't worry - she's got a helmet now and she's all about the bike. I'm sure all over North Perth there are kids about her age that have had their first bike rides in the past few weeks, and I hope all of them are enjoying it as much as this little one!

Why I'm Here

Not just an existential post, although the two kids in this photo are definitely the best thing about being "here." More pertinent (at the moment) is that like many people, one of the reasons I love North Perth is that it's a great place to raise my kids.

I wanted to do a series that showed kids in North Perth. The nature of this street photography thing kind of means I don't have models or anything, so I used the two I see most often - my own kids - for a series this week. They are not always the most willing models, but I do think they're the cutest ;)

One of our favourite things to do is hit the trails for a walk!

Best Buds

The buds are out on the trees today, and with all the little (literally very small) things that are springing to life lately, I find I'm doing a lot of macro-type photography, so you can probably expect some of this until the joy of Spring wears off on me. I hope that's okay :)
